Veteran Bollywood Actress Surekha Sikri passes away today at 75. She was a popular household name after playing Dadi Sa in primetime soap opera ‘Balika Vadhu’. But, did you know the talented actress never wanted to come into acting. Here are some unknown facts which you must know about her.
Born on 19 April, 1945 in Delhi, Surekha Sikri spent her childhood and young age in Amroha and Nainital. The three times National Award Winner, Surekha Sikri, didn’t wanted to become an actor initially. She was very brilliant student in the school. From her school days only, she wanted to be a writer or a journalist. But what changes her goal is very interesting to know!
When she was pursuing her graduation from Aligarh Muslim University, the director of National School Of Drama, Ebraham Alkazi, once visited her college and presented a play ‘The King Lear’. Surekha’s sister ‘Phulmani’ who was also studying in the same college impressed so much by the play. She decided to take her admission in National School of Drama and bought NSD admission form too. But soon Phulmani looses her interest. The form left unfilled for many days. One day Surekha’s mother suggested Surekha to why not fill the form for herself. Then Surekha filled the form and got selected in NSD. She got graduated from NSD in 1968.
After graduation, Surekha did theatre for many years and got her first break in bollywood with the film ‘Kissa Kursi Ka’ in 1978. She later went on doing many films like Tamas, Nazar, Mammo, Sardari Begum, Sarfarosh, etc. She got her first National award for Tamas in 1986 followed by her second prestigious award in 1995 for the film ‘Mammo’. Later, she worked in 2018 film ‘Badhaai Ho’ for which Surekha got her third National award.
Surekha Sikri becomes a household name from a TV serial ‘Balika Vadhu’. She has also played prominent roles in serials like ‘Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani’ and ‘Pardesh Mein Hai Mera Dil’. Even though she is a Sikh, she has dabbled in South Indian cinema too, specifically in a Malayalam film called ‘Janamadinam’ where she played the role of a mother.
Surekha is also related to Naseeruddin Shah as the first wife of Naseer before Ratna Pathak Shah was Manara Sikri, who was the step-sister of Surekha. Surekha Sikri was last seen in Zoya Akhtar’s short film in Netflix Anthology ‘Ghost Stories’.
