In an interview, Amitabh Bachchan said that he was amongst those who wanted to play ‘Daku Gabbar Singh’ in ‘Sholay’. When Amjad Khan was cast for Gabbar, many doubted his ability to give justice to the character. Amitabh Bacchan agreed there were few who said such things but he never thought the same, he said that he and Amjad Khan bonded the very first day on sets. However he wanted to play the role and he even asked Ramesh Sippy, the Director of the movie for it, but Ramesh was clear with his choices and the rest is history. Daku Gabbar Singh, Jai-Veeru, Basanti, Thakur Baldev Singh, Asrani as ‘ Hum angrezo ke jamane ke jailor hai’ are the most iconic roles considered even today. Amjad Khan has played many roles after ‘Daku Gabbar Singh’ but none are considered to be as great as Gabbar.
