Last year on February 24, the film fraternity lost one of its legendary actor, Sridevi. The whole nation was upset by this biggest fall when Sridevi passed away in Dubai last year. Its been a year but no one has forgotten this incident. After a year Anupam Kher expresses sentiments of Sridevi’s fans, family and fraternity friends in just the right words and wrote, “It will never ever register that Sridevi is not there”.
On February 24, 2018, India received a terrible shock when veteran actress Sridevi passed away due to accidental drowning in the bathtub in her hotel suite in Dubai. The enigmatic actress, who lived the cinematic dream for 50 years, had gone to Dubai to attend Mohit Marwah’s wedding. The news became a shock for the whole nation.
Anupam told IANS from New York, “It is something lots and lots of fans of her, including me, will live in denial of because it was so sudden, so shocking and so abrupt. Yet, the reality is one year now.”
Sridevi’s career began at a tender age of four with a devotional film, Thunaivan. And since then there was no stopping for her. She did numerous experiments with genres, languages, looks, and characters. The veteran actress won million of hearts and became the most talented actresses of 1990s in Bollywood.
From playing different types of role, she has won hearts with her expressive eyes and dancing skills. From her double role in “ChaalBaaz”, as a woman with retrograde amnesia in “Sadma”, a shape-shifting woman, the warm mother act in “English Vinglish”; her journey has been an epic.
Anupam further said, “I have never seen so much adulation for any actress in my entire career. According to me, she was one of the finest actresses, even internationally, that I have ever worked with or seen.” Apart from having a great sense of humor in real life, Anupam described her as, “unassuming, real and humane.”
Sridevi’s brother-in-law and co-star, Anil Kapoor has done several films together. Anil says that there’s a certain emptiness that the family usually feels whenever there is a house get-together.
Anil told IANS, “Her presence is irreplaceable. With time, we get over people and their presence… and then there are some personalities whose presence, enigma, beauty, and body of work, everything is memorable. She is that personality.”
Satish Kaushik, who has acted with Sridevi, told IANS, “It was not only a personal loss but also a huge professional loss because it is hard to find an actor who is so dedicated and disciplined. I really wanted to make a film and cast her, but that wish remains unfulfilled.”
After getting married to Boney Kapoor, Sridevi took a break from her career and focused on being a mother to daughters, Jahnvi and Khushi. Her comeback with English English was a huge success.
The film’s director, Gauri Shinde, recalled the memories and her childlike innocence. Gauri quoted, “The most special memory of her is of having the honor to have directed the most magnificent actress on earth… to have held her hand, to have hugged her and felt the warmth that is so special.”
Actor Adil Hussain who also shared the screen with Sridevi said that she was often the center of attraction in a room because of her presence and beauty. Adil stated, “Doing that for an actress of her stature is tough. But it’s something she managed. She was a true actress who loved her art… She was a simple, humble, quiet individual who was a brilliant actress that the nation loved.”
After giving a phenomenal performance in “English Vinglish”, Sridevi gave us another legendary performance in Ravi Udyawar’s “Mom”.
Udyawar said, “We were starting a new chapter to explore the actress in her that the world didn’t see before. But things got over and finished even before we imagined.”
