The He-Man of Indian Cinema, Dharmendra, once revealed an interesting trivia about the casting of Sholay. He said that Amitabh Bachchan got Sholay because of him.

The iconic role of Jai from the classic Indian film, Sholay, was earlier supposed to be played by Shatrughan Sinha. It was Dharmendra who put good words for Amitabh Bachchan to the makers of the film. Dharmendra once revealed the reason behind Amitabh Bachchan’s casting for ‘Sholay’.

In an interview, Dharmendra revealed that he played a prominent role in the hiring of Amitabh Bachchan as Jai in Ramesh Sippy’s iconic film. He told that he is talking about it in public because Amitabh himself thanked him. When the legend was asked in Aap Ki Adalat if this story is true or not, Dharmendra replied, “I’ve never spoken about this, but since Amitabh has started saying that I helped him get the role, I’ll say it: yes, I did help him get the role. He used to come to me… But originally, the role was going to go to Shatrughan Sinha.”

When Shatrughan Sinha spoke to him about why he suggested Amitabh’s name, Dharmendra told, “Yaar, kuch samajh nahi aata, woh pehle aaya, socha chalo bechare ko de do. ” Shatrughan himself talked about the same when he visited Indian Idol 12, he said, “During those times, I was continuously shooting for films which had two heroes and, somehow, we can call it a human error or my dates were an issue due to which I couldn’t sign the film Sholay. I’m sad but happy at the same time as due to Sholay, national icon Amitabh Bachchan, who is my dear friend, got such a big break.”

Sholay is considered an iconic Indian film. It stars Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Amjad Khan and Sanjeev Kapoor in prominent roles. The Ramesh Sippy directorial film was written by Salim-Javed.
