Dilip Kumar and Rakhee were almost finalised for Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini starrer ‘Baghban’, Producer Renu Chopra reveals

The 2003 released drama film ‘Baghban’ opened with a bang on box office as well as among the critics. It’s quite impossible that you didn’t have watched this film at least once in your lifetime. But, do you know that Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini was not the first choice to play the lead?

Film Producer Renu Chopra has revealed some very lesser known facts from her film ‘Baghban’. In a recent interview with The Times of India, Renu chopra revealed that legendary actors Dilip Kumar and Rakhee were almost finalised for the film. But, Dilip Saahab’s health  halted their way. “My father-in-law was supposed to make that film with Dilip Kumar and Rakhee, but she opted out and later he fell ill. It never got made,” Renu said.

When things didn’t get materialised then the makers signed Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini for the respective roles. Directed by Ravi Chopra, the film revolves around an elder couple who have to live apart from each other as their children didn’t want to live with them. The film depicted the delicate relationship between Parents and child. Other than Amitabh and Hema, Salman Khan was also a part of the film.

Further talking about the film Renu added, “Some changes were made in the script, the story was made to look contemporary with Valentine’s Day but the essence of the subject was retained. Ravi did invite Dilip Kumar for the mahurat of the film but he had begun to keep unwell and was confined to the wheelchair. When we did go to invite them for the mahurat, Saira remembered the entire story of the film that was narrated to Dilip saab. All the scenes were embedded in her mind and she was impressed with the romance of the elderly couple.”

Legendary actor Dilip Kumar aka Yousuf Khan passed away on July 7, 2021.
