Actor Dilip Kumar recalls the cult classic movie ‘Devdas’ (1995) and shares an iconic scene from the movie on social media. He made his acting debut in Jwar Bhata (1944).
On Monday, the legendary actor shared a short video on his Twitter handle from the National Award winning movie ‘Devdas’ and the scene portrayed Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala. The 98 year old star performed the titular role and Vyjayanthimala, the Padma Shri recipient as Chandramukhi in the movie.
Dilip Kumar wrote the post as “No artist is bigger than the character he’s playing”. Over the span of five decades, this scene is still considered to be one of the best performances portrayed by the film legend.
‘Devdas’ is a hindi language film based on the novel of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay with the same title and the movie was directed by Bimal Roy. Suchita Sen made her Bollywood debut in this movie playing the character of Parvati ‘Paro’ starring Dilip Kumar in the lead role and Vyjayanthimala in her dramatic role. Other significant roles in the film were played by Motilal, Murad, Nazir Hussain, Pratima Devi, Shivraj and Iftekar with Johnny Walker and Pran in cameo appearances.
In 2002, the remake of this movie was made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali starring Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role, Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Parvati.
On June 6, Dilip Kumar was rushed to Mumbai hospital when he complained of breathing issues and was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion. On June 11, the actor got discharged from the hospital and he tweeted his update on his health as “With your love and affection, and your prayers, Dilip Saab is going home from the hospital. God’s infinite mercy and kindness through Drs. Gokhale, Parker, Dr Arun Shah and the entire team at Hinduja Khar.–Faisal Farooqui”.
