The evergreen actress of Bollywood, all renowned as the original ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini celebrates her 71st Birthday today. The legendary actress’ love story with Dharmendra is one of the most renowned and famous stories of Bollywood. On the eve of Hema ji’s birthday, we take a look at how love brought them together:

Hema Malini and Dharmendra were working together for the film ‘Tum Haseen Main Jawan’ when they came close. She was the ‘Dream Girl of the industry and had already turned down advances from various superstars such as Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar. Dharmendra, the ‘He-Man’ of industry was already married to Prakash Kaur and had two sons, Sunny and Bobby.

However, even then, they could not help but fall for each other. Initially, Hema didn’t reciprocate to Dharmendra’s feelings, because he was already married. But such was his charm, that even she could not help but control her feelings.

Dharmendra’s first wife did not grant him divorce, and so, both Hema and Dharmendra converted to Islam to marry each other in the year 1980. Hema’s family was against her relationship with Dharmendra. They did not like the association of their daughter with an already married man.

Hema, after the demise of her father, married Dharmendra, and this really upset her mother. Their nikah was kept secret and one year later they married as per Iyengar customs, as she was an Iyengar.

In her autobiography, Hema Ji spoke at length about how Dharmendra’s strong and silent nature, resembled her mother and this is what attracted her. In the movie Sholay, their love got immortalised as Basanti and Veeru and since then till date, they have worked together in 42 movies.

They dated each other for 5 years before marriage and have been married to each other for almost 39 years now. Together they became parents to two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol.
