Kalki, the Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara actress claims she, too, “suffered from postpartum depression,” and it’s important that people understand that this occurs much more often than it is acknowledged. She hopes to use her reflections in her graphic memoir to discuss the many problems that pregnancy brings to women today.
She is well-known for her acting abilities on both, television and the stage. But now Kalki Koechlin, a voracious reader, is preparing to publish her first novel, a graphic memoir on motherhood illustrated by Valeriya Polyanychko. In a conversation with The Hindustan Times, the actress disclosed details about her motive and she said that she chose to write a book because surprisingly, “so few people talk about the difficulties of pregnancy and motherhood. We only hear about how wonderful this experience is, which of course it is, but there’s a whole plethora of physical and mental changes that take a lot out of a person. People think that if you say bad things about your experiences of being a mother, it’s going to take away from your love for your child!”
The Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actress who is a mother to a 15-month-old daughter, Sappho, with her boyfriend Guy Hershberg, recalls her health condition at the time of her pregnancy and the difficulties she went through, being alone with a baby at the time of a global pandemic. She suffered from postpartum depression, accompanied by sleep deprivation, iron deficiency, and exhaustion. She had to consult her therapist and gynecologist often as she was a working mother, having to balance both sides of her life all alone. Therefore, she decided to write this book to ensure that, “people know that this happens a lot and happens lot more than it’s admitted.” Kalki’s book will be released later this year.
