Kaun Banega Crorepati, the popular quiz show, that has been on air for 13 seasons was hosted by Amitabh Bachchan except for one season. In 2007, Shah Rukh Khan was called for the show as the quizmaster when Amitabh Bachchan refused the offer.
When the makers was expecting for another successful season, it was reported that the television ratings dropped quickly. It seems that the audience was unable to accept Shah Rukh Khan as the new host and from the next season onwards, Amitabh Bachchan was brought back to the show.
Siddharth Basu, the producer of the show, in an interview with The Indian Express mentioned the reason why season 3 hosted by Shah Rukh Khan didn’t work. He told that “What didn’t work with SRK was the comparison with AB. I think SRK did KBC in his own way with charm and wit, and as far as I know, it garnered good ratings. We have done three shows with SRK, and I believe he is one of the most natural TV hosts who can think on his feet”.
“But let’s face it, AB will always be the ABC of KBC, and on this show, those are very big shoes to fill”, he added.
Amitabh Bachchan was not keen about doing the show when the first season was proposed to him. The actor got convinced to join the show only after the team flew him to London to see the taping of the original show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Shah Rukh said that when he was called to host the show, “I was pleasantly surprised when STAR offered me the show. I was a participant in season one of KBC… and little did I know one day I would be hosting it”.
“It is a huge act to follow, that of Mr Bachchan… but it also excites me that I am getting an opportunity to reach out (and) talk and interact with my audience through a medium where I began my career as an actor years ago”, he added.
