After 15 years in the making, Karan Johar finally took Kalank to bring on the floors. KJo had planned to make Kalank 15 years ago and that time, the producer had a completely different star cast for the film. Earlier the movie was planned with stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji, and Kajol as the lead cast of the movie. Kalank is the most awaited and ambitious dream project that has finally turned our heads by turning into reality.

The dream project of Karan Johar was originally supposed to feature Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, now star casts Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, and Sanjay Dutt.

In his book An Unsuitable Boy, KJo had mentioned that Kalank was conceptualized 15 years ago. Karan wrote, “When my father was alive, I was writing a love story set in pre-partition times. But the canvas was too large, it was supposed to have Shah Rukh, Ajay, Rani, and Kajol. It was about homes, and it had a Hindu-Muslim angle. It was a very strong subject, and would be called Kalank.”

It’s been almost a year since Karan has announced his dream project. Finally, he is all set for the story that is very close to his heart. The movie is slated to release on April 17. But before that, the producer has given a glimpse into the period drama with its two-minute teaser. The teaser was launched on Tuesday at a grand event in Mumbai. It garnered more than 14 million views and still counting.

Speaking at the teaser launch on Tuesday, Karan said, “Kalank is a movie that is close to my heart and my father’s since 2003 and it’s been on my mind since then. It was difficult without him to touch this film and one day I just decided to do it. I must say it’s been possible because of Sajid Nadiadwala and Vijay Singh. It’s been a pleasure and I’m looking at working on more films with him in the future.”

Karan further said that the movie was supposed to commence in 2004, but his dad Yash Johar passed away even before they could begin the shooting.

Meanwhile, Kalank is being directed by Abhishek Varman. The film is based on a love story set in 1940s India.
