Saira Banu used to address her husband, actor Dilip Kumar as ‘My Kohinoor’. The actor took his departure from the world at the age of 98 leaving a void in the film industry as he was an actor from whom the future filmmakers and actors could learn a lot. There will not be another Dilip Kumar and the Bollywood has lost its Kohinoor. Even though the legendary actor will be widely known for his filmography, the love story with Saira Banu will be forever and always stay as the greatest in history.
Speaking in an old interview, Saira Banu had told that “I was not just another girl smitten by Dilip Kumar. For me, it was no castle in the air because I had given my dream the strong foundation of faith- faith in myself and faith in God”.
Saira Banu met him at the screening of Mughal-e-Azam at the age of 16 and was completely captivated by his charm. She recalled how the actor complimented her and how happy and excited she was. Saira Banu told that “When he smiled at me and remarked that I was a pretty girl, I could feel my whole being taking wing and flying rapturously. I knew somewhere deep within me that I was going to be his wife”.
Saira Banu’s mother, Naseem Banu, was the one who acted as the cupid between the two. It was an instant ‘yes’ when Dilip Kumar proposed to her at the age of 22. The two got married in 1966 and there were opinions that they will soon parts ways because of their age gap as the actor was 44 when he married Saira Banu. But their love proved everyone wrong.
