Director Nandita Das is well known for making films on some unconventional subjects. Tis time too, she is coming up with her movie ‘Manto’ with a unique subject. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is playing the main lead in the film which is based on 1940s post-Independence period of India. The film has already been selected for Toronto International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.
The trailer showcases the ups and downs of Manto’s life. Saadat Hasan Manto has been influencing students for many years. In an interview, Nawazuddin Siddiqui said: “Manto is a personality that anyone who wants to tell and hear the truth can relate to.”
Famous Urdu writer “Manto” was criticized for writing stories for having inappropriate content. The writer fought a legal battle in order to defend his ‘right to write’. Set in the 1940’s era, the trailer itself gives a glimpse of Nawazuddin’s character in the film of Das. For Manto, there was nothing wrong with his writing but the society considered them as obscene and unacceptable. Nawazuddin shared a poster of ‘Manto’ which says “Saadat Hasan Manto- He believed in the truth, he dared to speak it.”
Known for his commendable acting skills Nawazuddin playing an Urdu writer could impress an audience with his performance in this movie. Rasika Duggal is playing the wife of Nawazuddin and actor Tahir Raj Bhasin is playing ‘Shyam Chaddha’ the famous superstar of Bollywood from 40’s. The film also features Javed Akhtar, Rishi Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Paresh Rawal, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Rajashri Deshpande
