The Supreme Court has suggested that filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali change the name of his new movie Gangubai Kathiawadi, releasing this Friday. The court has suggested in light of the several cases pending before courts seeking to halt its release. Siddhartha Dave, the lawyer for Bhansali Productions, informed Supreme Court today that he will seek instructions from his client about the suggestion. The top court will continue hearing the matter tomorrow.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s novel, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, and will also star Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, Shantanu Maheshwari, Jim Sarbh, Varun Kapoor, and Indira Tiwari.

Several cases have been filed against Gangubai Kathiawadi including one by Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and Kamathipura resident Shraddha Surve. The petition filed by Shraddha Surve said Gangubai Kathiawadi shows the Kamathipura area in a bad light and may besmirch and defame its residents. The petition said, if Gangubai Kathiawadi is allowed to be released with the name Kamathipura then it causes harm and disrespect to the residents, especially women. She also added that currently, not even 5 percent of the Kamathipura area is active in prostitution.
