Assamese film Village Rockstars Made It To The Oscars For Its Best Content

Finally, the time has come when India is selected for the Oscar award for its best content in the movies. No, it’s not Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavat or Alia Bhatt’s Raazi or any blockbuster movie of Bollywood. It is an Assamese film Village Rockstars by Rima Das. Village Rockstars is India’s official contender for the 91st Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The movie is competing with over 28 films to make it to India’s first Oscar.

According to a leading daily- Indian Express, Jury member Anant Mahadevan said, “Village Rockstars is the closest film made by international standards. Very proud and to select this film and send it to the Oscars.”

The movie revolves around a girl Dhunu who lives in poverty and learns to fend for herself. However, that does not stop her from following her dream of becoming a rock band and owning a guitar someday.

Here are the names of Hindi films who were in the competition of winning the Oscar. Names are Padmaavat, Raazi, October, Love Sonia, Manto, Padman, 102 Not Out. From the Marathi film industry Bogda, Nude, Gulabjaam have been selected. From Gujarati- Reva, Best of Luck Laalu are selected. From all above the names, the Oscars selected the Assamese’s movie Village Rockstars. Ain’t it is a proud feeling for every one of us that a regional film is making noise all over?

Up until now, only three films have made it till the last round and were nominated in the foreign language film category – Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957), Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! (1988), and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan (2001). The gala is scheduled to be held on February 24, 2019.
